As a new mother I have personally experienced what it is to be confronted by the “rules” of modern motherhood and the expectations of society to “have it all together”.
In the early weeks of my son’s arrival, after countless hours of desperately searching for answers around the “right way” to mother my son and experiencing constant waves of anxiety, a gift arrived in the mail from a friend. One that would change the direction of my life, and the way that I choose to mother.
I was gifted Amy Taylor Kabbaz’s book, “Mama Rising” and from the moment I opened the first page and the tears began to fall, I made a promise to myself.
I wasn’t prepared to lose myself to the “Good Mother” standards that I felt pulled to perform to anymore.
I wasn’t willing to experience the bouts of anxiety that came with no longer trusting myself and my decisions.
I no longer wanted to let others’ expectations govern my motherhood journey, measure it in metrics according to the “standard” way things should be done, or compare it to someone else’s.
Today, my own personal experience combined with my training as a specialised Occupational Therapist in the field of women’s mental health, a Mama Rising Facilitator and a Matrescence Coach, has taught me how to listen to what is not being said, and ask the questions that really need to be asked.
